Yeah, its definitely different. You can immerse yourself in doing missions for levels at a time. There's no way to get around having to travel across the map in a ship -- slow... tho there's a way to kinda 'teleport' by leaving your ship in a port 'booking passage' (instantly) to it, but of course a lot of inventory can only be contained in a ship's hold, so when you do that, you're leaving a lot of stuff behind.
Characters level to 50. I'm at 20 now. I don't think that players can pvp to capture territories well until one hits L50. There's some interesting new concepts tho. Players can do instanced missions in ports to contribute toward their nation's control of an area but I think the big actions are groups of players organized into action in the seawaters around a port.
The crafting/manufacturing aspect is neat. You can BUILD ships, and there's over 100 different kinds to build. Granted, many of those are different types of a model, but there are still prob 30+ different lines, and bigger is not necessarily better, tho I'm sure that at L50, there's but a handful of different types you'll see being played via different strategies and classes. But a single player can't pull of a ship building operation, since there's a limit of 10 lots PER ACCOUNT, and a lot is a structure, like a Plantation (different kinds), Shipyard (different kinds), a Mine (different kinds, like Iron, Copper, Gold, Silver), a Lumbermill (different kinds), a Quarry (different kinds), Provisioners, Draughtsman's Office, Recruitment Office, Farms (different kinds), etc. Probably takes 4-5 players working in specific roles to make a complete and efficient ship-building operation.
So guilds are key in this game, for crafting types and pvp/port-controlling, and I don't see any kind of organization in-game. Prob 1 in 20 players are guilded on my server, if that. Strange. I'll guildhunt when/if I hit L50. =) The game can get boring if players are just looking for action. I mean, everything is a version of ship-fighting and sword-fighting. There are still some bugs, but nothing glaring, really. The Caribbean environment portrayed in the game is GORGEOUS -- makes me want to go on another weeklong+ Caribbean cruise. The player models are nicely done. The female models are ravishing. A player can really detail out looks of their character model, in the beginning and throughout the game, for free. Ships and sails can be customized too. A lot of the game is graphically-appealing. Many of the town designs are re-used, which is a shame, even if it is pretty. The pirate dens are designed best of all (of course), imo.
That's what I've seen of the game so far. Definitely has promise. Less to do than in WoW by far, but its a new game, and its different for me.
